Stanford WiDS x DataDiva

Data/AI Skills Empowerment Project for 500 Women.

Data science increasingly affects every aspect of modern life from setting monetary policy, modeling climate change impacts, to how and where healthcare is administered. Data Science and its related areas are critically reshaping our world, yet women are still significantly underrepresented: they represent less than 20% of students and less than 10% of decision makers. Numerous studies cite this disparity as having a potentially dire impact on our societies.

It is imperative that we invest in Women in Data Science and increase their representation to:

* mitigate unconscious biases that can corrupt analytical and predictive models, resulting in decisions and designs that exacerbate inequalities, deepen divisions, and underserved populations
* ensure that critical issues for women, such as women’s healthcare and safety, are treated as a priority and accelerated
* ensure that economic justice & prosperity are accessible to all
* address talent shortage challenges in the workforce.

DataDiva workshop hosted at NitHub, University of Lagos

DataDiva is an independent workshop organized by Tech4her Africa [tech4her.org] to support the annual Women in Data Science (WiDS) Datathon [widsworldwide.org] held at Stanford University.

The WiDS Datathon is a social impact challenge aiming to inspire women worldwide to learn more about data science, and to create a supportive environment for women to connect with others in their community who share their interests. Data scientists of all levels are invited to participate in the datathon, including beginners.

Enhance Freshness & Reduce Waste with Robotics & Computer Vision

Nigeria loses an estimated 40–50% of fresh produce before it reaches consumers, largely due to poor post-harvest handling, lack of cold storage, and inefficient supply chains. According to the FAO, food waste costs the country billions annually, while millions still face food insecurity. Fresh fruits and vegetables are especially vulnerable, with spoilage often starting within 48 hours of harvest in hot climates. Robotics and AI-driven computer vision offer practical solutions — from detecting early spoilage and sorting produce to optimizing storage and distribution. Empowering women and youth with these skills not only addresses a national food security challenge but also opens new pathways for innovation, agritech entrepreneurship, and sustainable development in Nigeria.

Unraveling the Mysteries of the Female Brain

In 2025, the WiDS Datathon focuses on studying women’s brain health. Partnering with Ann S. Bowers Women’s Brain Health Initiative in collaboration with Cornell University and UC Santa Barbara, we aim to look at how imaging based measurements of the female brain track with diagnosis of neurological or neuropsychiatric diseases. Studying this area of brain health is critical to understanding how women’s brains are impacted by adolescence, menstrual cycles, the pill, pregnancy, menopause, and aging.

Applications close on March 7, 2025.
